LESSON 2: The Nature of God
The Nature of God
Scripture Focus: John 4:24 – “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Opening Question
When you think about God, what is the very first attribute or quality that comes to your mind, and why do you think that is?
Background
Understanding God’s nature is central to Christian faith. God has revealed Himself through Scripture so we can know who He is—not in full, but enough to build a relationship with Him. Today, we will discuss God’s attributes and see how knowing His nature changes how we worship, pray, and live.
Key Points
1. God is Spirit
John 4:24 – “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
God has no physical body and is not limited by time or space.
Discussion: How does knowing God is everywhere affect the way we live daily life?
2. God is Eternal
Psalm 90:2 – “Before the mountains were born, or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”
He always was, always is, and always will be.
Discussion: How does God’s eternal nature give us hope in uncertain times?
3. God is Unchanging
Malachi 3:6 – “For I, Yahweh, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.”
His character, promises, and nature never shift.
Discussion: How does God’s unchanging nature give you confidence in your walk with Him?
4. God is All-Knowing
Hebrews 4:13 – “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are uncovered and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom we have an account to give.”
Nothing is hidden from Him—past, present, or future.
Discussion: How does God’s knowledge affect the way you pray?
5. God is Holy
Isaiah 6:3 – “And one called out to another and said, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy, is Yahweh of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory.’”
He is pure, perfect, and separate from sin.
Discussion: What does God’s holiness teach us about how we should live?
6. God is Love
1 John 4:8 – “The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
Love is not just something He does—it is who He is.
Discussion: How do you personally experience God’s love in your life?
7. God is Just
Deuteronomy 32:4 – “The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He.”
He is perfectly fair and righteous in all His judgments.
Discussion: How does God’s justice give us both comfort and warning?
8. God is Merciful and Gracious
Ephesians 2:4-5 – “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.”
He gives what we don’t deserve (grace) and withholds what we do deserve (mercy).
Discussion: How can we reflect God’s mercy and grace in our relationships?
Application
Prayer Life: Pray remembering He is holy, all-knowing, and loving.
Daily Decisions: Trust His unchanging standards, not shifting culture.
Difficult Times: Rely on His eternal love and justice.
Relationships: Show mercy and grace to others as God has shown to you.
Memory Verse
John 4:24 – “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Discussion Questions
Which attribute of God brings you the most comfort, and why?
Which attribute challenges you the most, and how?
How does knowing God is all-knowing affect your honesty in prayer?
How should God’s holiness shape the way we worship Him?
What difference does God’s unchanging nature make in times of trial?
Prayer Focus
Pray, thanking God for who He is. Each person can choose one attribute of God if they choose (love, holiness, justice, mercy, etc.) and give thanks for it specifically.
