Bible Study Title: Who Is Afraid of Jesus?
Scripture Focus: Mark 5:1-20
Opening Prayer
Lord, help us to see You as our Savior and Redeemer, not someone to fear and avoid. Give us the courage to draw near to You, trust Your authority, and share what You have done in our lives.
Introduction
When Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee and entered the region of the Gerasenes, He encountered a man possessed by many demons. The account reveals different reactions to Jesus—fear from demons, fear from the townspeople, and gratitude from the healed man. Our response to Jesus reveals the condition of our hearts.
Bible Reading
Read Mark 5:1-20.Cross-reference: Matthew 8:28-34, Luke 8:26-39.
Section 1 – The Demons Feared Jesus
They recognized Him as the Son of the Most High God (Mark 5:7).
They begged not to be tormented before the appointed time (Matthew 8:29).
They knew their final destiny was eternal fire (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10).
Discussion Questions:
Why do demons fear Jesus?
How does this show His authority over spiritual powers?
Section 2 – The Lost Should Fear Jesus
Judgment is coming for those who reject Him (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).
Hell (Gehenna) is eternal and was prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41, 46).
Those whose names are not in the Book of Life will face the lake of fire (Revelation 20:15).
Reflection: How should the reality of judgment motivate us to share the Gospel?
Section 3 – The Townspeople Feared Jesus
They saw the healed man clothed and in his right mind—and were afraid (Mark 5:15).
Their fear led them to ask Jesus to leave rather than welcome Him (Mark 5:17).
They feared the unknown and missed out on blessings because they would not draw near.
Discussion Questions:
Why might people fear Jesus even after seeing His power for good?
What blessings might fear cause people to miss today?
Section 4 – The Healed Man Loved and Followed Jesus
He wanted to travel with Jesus out of gratitude (Mark 5:18).
Jesus sent him to share his testimony instead (Mark 5:19).
He proclaimed in the Decapolis what Jesus had done, and people marveled (Mark 5:20).
Reflection: In what ways can you share your personal testimony this week?
Section 5 – Application for Us
If you are not saved, fear Jesus as Judge and repent before it’s too late.
If you belong to Him, do not fear—He loves you, has freed you, and calls you to serve.
Like the healed man, our gratitude should drive us to tell others what Jesus has done.
Memory Verse
Mark 5:19 – “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.”
Closing Challenge
Fear can either push us away from Jesus or draw us to Him. Demons and the lost fear His judgment, but believers should find peace in His mercy and power. Which group are you in today?
