Gospel of Mark Bible Part 27: Jesus Calms the Storm [Bible Study]

Bible Studies based on sermons from The House of Faith Church by Rev. Bruce A. Shields

Bible Study Title: Jesus Calms the Storm – Faith Over Fear

Scripture Focus: Mark 4:35-41

Opening Prayer

Lord, help us to trust You in every storm we face. Strengthen our faith so that fear has no hold on us, and let us remember that You are Lord over all creation.

Introduction

The disciples faced a terrifying storm on the Sea of Galilee, but Jesus was asleep in the boat. When they woke Him in fear, He rebuked the wind and calmed the waves. This miracle teaches us about faith, fear, and the authority of Jesus Christ.

Bible Reading

Read Mark 4:35-41.Cross-reference: Matthew 8:23-27, Luke 8:22-25.

Section 1 – Storms Are Inevitable

  • Christians are not exempt from life’s storms (Matthew 7:24-27).

  • We live in a fallen world where sickness, loss, disappointment, and trials will come.

  • Some storms come because we follow Christ (John 16:33; Acts 14:22; 2 Timothy 3:12).

  • Peter reminds us not to be surprised when trials come (1 Peter 4:12).

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why is it important for believers to expect trials instead of being surprised by them?

  2. Can you recall a time when God used a storm in your life to grow your faith?

Section 2 – Jesus Helps Us in the Storm

  • The disciples panicked because they did not yet understand who Jesus was.

  • Fear reveals misplaced trust—when we fear the storm more than we trust Jesus, we give the storm more power in our minds (Mark 4:40-41).

  • Jesus is Lord over creation (Psalm 107:28-30; Colossians 1:16-17).

  • His Word is our anchor and guide in turbulent times (Matthew 7:24-27).

Reflection: What “storms” in your life right now might be testing your faith?

Section 3 – The Role of Faith

  • Faith means trusting that what Jesus says will come to pass.

  • When He told them to go “to the other side,” the disciples could have rested in that promise (Mark 4:35).

  • Faith holds on to God’s Word even when the waves rise (Hebrews 11:1; Romans 10:17).

Discussion Questions:

  1. How can you strengthen your faith before the next storm comes?

  2. What are some Scriptures you can hold onto in fearful times?

Section 4 – The Greatest Storm Ahead

  • The ultimate storm is the Day of Judgment (2 Peter 3:7, 10-12).

  • Christ died to save us from that day of wrath (Romans 5:6-10).

  • Only those who obey the Gospel will be saved (Mark 16:15-16; Acts 2:38; Revelation 20:11-15).

Reflection: How does knowing Christ as Savior prepare you for both life’s storms and eternity?

Memory Verse

Mark 4:39 – “And He woke up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Silence! Be still.’ And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.”

Closing Challenge

Storms will come—but Jesus is greater than the wind and the waves. When fear rises, remember His power, trust His promises, and rest in His presence.
